North Metopes of the Parthenon

John Boardman, Greek Sculpture Classical Period, fig.87 (Marion Cox)
This shows episodes at the Sack of Troy but the three metopes at the east end show attending gods, the easternmost with Athena and possibly Hera. This is the only one not disfigured in the Christian era, possibly because it recalls an Annunciation. The Trojan War served as a parable for the Persian wars and the Sack of Athens in 5th century Athenian art.
