Melos

Map of Greece and the AegeanAn island of the Greek Cyclades, home of a major Bronze Age culture (at Phylakopi) and source for obsidian (a volcanic glass). It was rich in the 7th/6th centuries (jewellery, gems) but later declined and was savagely used by Athens in the late 5th century for its neutrality. It prospered under Rome.
