- CAVI Inscriptions: Body, main picture: to right of (behind) the right youth in the left pair of
youths oiling themselves, facing the figure: φιλο̣(ν) σε, complete{1}. A youth
is under a spout of the fountain: above the spout: καλος. By the youth:
Αντιμενες. I.e.: καλος | Αντιμενες{2}. Under the foot, Gr.: ligature ΛΕ
[[lig.]].
- CAVI Footnotes: {1} So Burow, rightly. The nu is reversed, see pl. 11,d; it is not a sigma
(cf. also Vos in CVA). Wernicke follows CIG in reading φιλω σε; see K. Wernicke,
Die griechischen Vasen mit Lieblingsinschriften (1890) 20 and n. 2. Beazley in
JHS 47 (1927) read Φιλων σε with aposiopesis. He mentions as another possibility
φιλω{σ}σε. Heydemann had wrongly restored Φιλοξενος. Cf. also Robinson–Fluck
(1937), 83f. and n. 17. {2} Burow thinks the kalos-name may refer to the bather.
Beazley suggests restoring Antimenes on the NY psykter with athletes by Oltos;
ARV[2] 54/7. Another restoration proposed is on a BF lekythos, Wernicke 19, but
Beazley, ABV 664, s.v. Ainios objects (Once Lord Guilford).
- CAVI Comments: = xv e 28. Broad and messy writing. Burow notes that the writing becomes
neater in the later works by the Antimenes Painter, but he thinks it is mostly
by the same hand with only two doubtful cases. See Burow further.
