  • AVI Record Number: 3223
  • CAVI Collection: Compiègne, Musée Vivenel 1106.
  • CAVI Lemma: Fragmentary RF cup. From Vulci{1}. Unattributed{2}. Last quarter sixth.
  • CAVI Subject: Int.: running youth carrying a pointed amphora.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Int.: various readings have been proposed: καλεhοπος, retr. and (.)εσσθε. Canino cat{3}. παις πιεσθε. Kunstblatt. καλει οπως πιεσθε. `vocat ut bibatis.' Amati. οπως πιεσθε. Gerhard. οπως πιης, Σθενω καλη. Panofka{4}. καλη οπως πιεσσθε. CIG. ι...εσσθε and καλε hοπ... in caps. CVA, France 3. ------ιεσσθε and καλεWοπο, retr., with repainting after that. Old reading by Beazley. ------Beazley reads from the Canino cat. and Gerhard's apparatus: to right of the youth's forehead: (κ)αλε(μ)οπος, retr.{5}. To right of his middle: πιεσσθε. Beazley thus reads: κάλει μ’ὅπο̅ς πίεσσθε, an Iambic dimeter catalectic{6}. ------
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} Beazley (1941): not from Nola: no. 575 of Canino cat. of 1829; then intact, but broken before it reached the Compiègne museum; an alien outer part was added, see Beazley JHS 45 (1925) 286; medaillon and foot are preserved. {2} CVA wrongly says that Beazley in VA (1918), 6 put the vase close to Psiax. {3} (.) = pointed gamma + iota, close together. {4} for bibliography on these readings see CVA, France 16. {5} The first letter is no doubt a smeared kappa; the fifth = heta with a curved horizontal, but read by Beazley as an upside down mu (the lambda he says should also be upside down, since the vase is too early for Ionic lambda [but see above!]). {6} according to Beazley, either retr., with lambda and sigma upside down, or more probably written in three spells: κα, retr. + λεμ + οπος, retr.
  • CAVI Comments: Beazley cites 3 examples for the omission of heta. He considers πιεσσθε future [indicative] rather than present subjunctive (see AJA). - [I had thought of reading κάλει hοπος πιεσσθε, but that still leaves an Ionic lambda, which is perhaps possible (pace Beazley), as Ionic vase inscriptions appear in the later sixth century, e.g. AttScr (1990), no. 327. Is Amati's καλεῖ to be rejected?]
