  • CAVI Collection: Oxford 211.
  • CAVI Lemma: BF neck amphora. From Gela. Unattributed; Dot-Band Class. First quarter fifth.
  • CAVI Subject: A: Heracles citharoedus mounting a platform; at left, his cloak and quiver hung up; in front of him, on the platform, his club propped up diagonally. B: an unclear scene: a bearded satyr, seated on top of a large stepped block, perhaps an altar, leans against a wineskin and plays the flutes; to left and right of the block are remains of a different scene, variously interpreted (at left, human'legs; at right, animal (goat) heads to right); see CVA, p. 11.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: Nonsense: A: to left of Heracles' head, at top of scene: 4 letters, mostly dots(?). Along Heracles' back, probably not facing him and not retr.: χοεκ^χο{1}. Between Heracles' legs: χοε. To right of the cithara, perhaps curved: at least 3 letters, probably more. Along the club, also not retr. and hence upside down: χοτεχο. B: above the satyr's raised leg: (ο̣)ο(.)(.)(π). Behind the satyr's back: χοε(κ)χσ{2}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} so the ph. and text in CVA; part of the quiver intervenes. {2} the kappa is unclear.
  • CAVI Comments: = G 240. Small. Leagran-type nonsense.
  • CAVI Number: 5875
  • AVI Bibliography: Gardner (1906), 226-28 (dr. after JHS 13). — ABV (1956), 484/9, 700. — J. Boardman, CVA Oxford 3, Great Britain 14 (1975), pl. 22,1-3. — Add.[2] (1989), 122.
