  • CAVI Collection: Boston 13.186.
  • CAVI Lemma: RF skyphos. From Suessula. Makron. Hieron, potter. First quarter fifth. 490-480. Hauptwerk II (Kunisch).
  • CAVI Subject: A:Paris abducting Helen{1}. B: Menelaus attacking Helen{2}.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: A: to right of the top of head of the left-most youth, just below the margin: Αινεα[ς]{3}. Above Aeneas' shield, following its curve, to left of the helmeted head of Paris: Αλεχσανδρος, retr. hελενε. To left of Aphrodite's face: Αφροδιτε, retr.{4}. To left of Peitho's raised hand, into which it runs, with the last letter raised: Πειθο. Behind a boy standing at the extreme right, along the lower body and positioned under handle A/B, vertically up: Μακρον : εγραφσεν{5}. B: Κρισευς. To left of the top of head of Chryseis: Κρισεις. To right of Aphrodite's face: Αφροδιτε. To right of Helen's face: hελενε. Behind Menelaus' helmet: Μενελεος. To left of Priam's face (he sits to left under the handle B/A): Πριαμος, retr.{6}. On the right arm of handle B/A, in the BG portion of the right hasta, Gr., from the root, facing out (see pl. 77,2): hιερον εποιεσεν{7}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} O. and S. identify the scene as a procession on foot (recalling the wedding procession) with the χειρ επι καρπῳ gesture suggestion abduction. {2} Menelaus attacking Helen: Robertson (1995) believes the attack depicted is at the occasion of the embassy to Troy, not at end of Trojan War. Will publish this (see his n. 359). {3} Kunisch: Αινεα[ς], for which there is room. {4} K. does not give the inscription of Aphrodite in the cat. (cf. also the listing, p. 100 n. 402). The ph. shows it clearly. {5} under the handle, an unnamed youth to left; on his left, upward, the Makron signature. {6} Priam is seated under a handle. Kunisch reads: Πριανος, retr. {7} K. in cat. has in the sketch: εποισεν. I cannot verify this in the phs., as the area is all scratched up. On p. 8, K. says the sigma here is four-stroke; so also in the sketch; it is the only 4-stroke sigma on the vase. Cup-type handle. The glaze flaked off after the inscription was made.
  • CAVI Comments: On Kriseus and Kriseis see CB 37 and cf. Kretschmer (1894), 206, accepted in Threatte (1980), 261 and 453. I do think (pace Kretschmer) that these names are miswritten for Χρυσευς and Χρυσεις who are wrongly imported here from the Iliad. Makron is a very poor speller, cf. AttScr. Some remarks on the name Makron in CB 39. For the shape of the handles (cup type), see Kunisch, p. 15.
