CAVI Footnotes: {1} Attributed by Richter to an Athanasia Painter, by whom no other vases are known!
CAVI Comments: Cf. Once Rome (Rosi), RF bell krater by the Eupolis Painter, with the same scene. Melanippus in the Seven Against Thebes wounded Tydeus mortally; T. was to be made immortal by Athena, but was found gnawing M.' hand, whence Athena turned away and T. died. In another version, Tydeus sucked out the brain of his enemy Melanippus, whence the offer of immortality was withdrawn. The myth is found on a third Attic vase: Beazley (1947a), 1ff. Three-stroke sigma.
