  • CAVI Collection: London 99.7-21.5.
  • CAVI Lemma: RF dinos. From Agrigento. Group of Polygnotos. Third quarter fifth.
  • CAVI Subject: Theseus and the Amazons{1}.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: To right of one head: [Πε]ριθος. Similarly: Θεσε̣υς. Above the figure: Α[νδ]ρομα[χε]{2}. To left of an Amazon's horse, retr.: hιππο[λυ](τ)ε{3}. To right of another hero, retr.: Ακαμας. To left of an Amazon's head: [---]ο̣ε{4}. Similarly for another: [--]α[---]. Above a fallen Greek: Μεγαρευς{5}. To right of the rightmost hero's head: Σθε[ν]ε[λος]{6}.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} Beazley compares Madrid 11,013. {2} so CVA and FR; Bothmer gives the name as completely extant, probably rightly. {3} so FR; CVA has hιππολ[υτ]ε, Bothmer has hιππο[λυ]τε. {4} so Reichhold's dr.; the text has [---]ε. {5} FR interprets this as Μελα[ν]ευς, which is surely wrong; FR says that Melaneus and Sthenelos are free inventions, but Sthenelos can be an Argive name. {6} so FR; CVA and Bothmer have Σθε[νελος].
  • CAVI Comments: Attic with four-stroke sigma (once). Megareus here as ally of Athens?
  • CAVI Number: 4706
  • AVI Bibliography: Walters (1899), 392. — FR (1904–32), i, 292-95, pl. 58 (dr.). — ARV[2] (1963), 1052/29. — Add.[2] (1989), 322. — Matheson (1995), 164, 452/PGU34, pl. 143A-D (all).
