- AVI Record Number: 6406
- CAVI Collection: Paris, Louvre G 30.
- CAVI Lemma: RF neck amphora. From Vulci. Euphronios. Last quarter sixth. 510-500. 515-510
(`Euphronios').
- CAVI Subject: Neck: symposium: A: a youth on a couch to left but looking right (at the
companion on B?), while playing kottabos. B: a youth on a couch to left, singing
and playing the lyre.
- CAVI Inscriptions: A: between the raised cup and the back of the youth's head: Λεαγρος, and
above the head: καλος. Below the hand holding the cup: παις{1}. B: starting in
front of the youth's mouth and curving up over his head: μαμεκαποτεο, retr.{2}.
To left of the lyre: Λεαγρος καλος, retr.
- CAVI Footnotes: {1} Do the three words make one inscription (Λεαγρος | καλος | παις), and
does it then refer to the figure? Beazley does not take it so. Note that Leagros
kalos appears also on the other side. I rather think that both youths are
celebrating Leagros. {2} this has been compared to Sappho fr. 36 Page: καὶ ποθήω
καὶ μάομαι. If so, it is a free citation with numerous irregularities, which I
still think should be considered miswriting.
- CAVI Comments: Perpillou explains the misspellings in the quotation as based on special
rules, following in part S. Theodorsson, The Phonemic System of the Attic
Dialect 400-340 B.C. (1974).
