East Frieze of the Parthenon
John Boardman, Greek Sculpture Classical Period, fig.94 (Marion Cox)
This shows part of the Panathenaic procession of mortals and heros continuing from either east corner of the Parthenon and converging at the centre, above the main door of the temple, at the five-figure scene of the sacred peplos robe. The robe is being received from a small girl by the Royal Archon. Flanking this group are twelve seated Olympian gods with attendant deities; Hermes, Dionysos, Demeter, Ares, Nike, Hera, Zeus, Athena, Hephaistos, Poseidon, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite and Eros.
