  • AVI Record Number: 5749
  • CAVI Collection: New York, Gregory Callimanopoulos.
  • CAVI Lemma: BF Panathenaic prize amphora. From Vulci. Berlin Painter{1}. 480-470 (Neils). Latest period (after 480) (Beazley).
  • CAVI Subject: A: Athena (device: gorgoneion). B: long-distance race (dolichodromos): four bearded runners approaching a terma.
  • CAVI Inscriptions: A: to right of the left column: τον Αθενεθεν αθλον vac. 1. The inscription is almost parallel to the column. The hand-writing on the Goluchow vase (see note 2, below) is clearly the same, but there is no vacat at the end.
  • CAVI Footnotes: {1} so Neils. Robertson thinks school of Berlin Painter, as late as Achilles Painter. He considers it to be from the workshop of the Berlin Painter, perhaps in the 450's and thus contemporary with the Achilles Painter's prize vases with gorgoneion. {2} Late but earlier than the Goluchow vase (Beazley; prize Panathenaic, ABV 408/2). The inscriptions on the two vases may be compared in V.Pol. (1928), pl. 1,1 and 2. CVA: Ca. 480-470 [Robertson in Robertson (1992), would put it later.]
